2008 Match of Champions Honorees

Pauline Davis ~ Honorary Secretary ~ Timer ~ 2008

Pauline started to assist Murphy Halloway with secretary and timing rodeos in the early 1960's. She has been involved with Rodeo in someway from grade school on and says, "It gets in your blood." In 1967, she was elected SDRA Secretary. Besides the duties of keeping track of points and printing a monthly news bulletin, which during the season became a weekly bulletin, she continued to secretary and time at lease one rodeo a week. The news bulletins took a lot of time, when she started there were only one hundred to do, by the time she quit there were over four hundred and fifty. They had to be typed and printed out on a hand crank mimeograph then stapled, and made ready to mail. Pauline resigned in 1978 when Harold's health sent them South for the winters. Pauline also worked with the NRCA making many friends from the five states the NRCA serves. She says her days working with the rodeo were the happiest twenty plus years of her life. By the time she quit working with the 4-H & High School Rodeos she had worked with three generations of some of the families. Pauline says that Husband, Harold, children Arlie and Roxie and grandsons Zach and Josh Davis and Austin and Marty Stambach have all participated and given her great support. She says, "It's given me great enjoyment to be a part of the greatest sport with the best camaraderie." Pauline has made many life long friends and dearly loved working with all the cowboys and cowgirls. She says that all the Committees, Contractors and Contestants always treated her with the greatest respect. Pauline wishes to thank the Casey Tibbs foundation for selecting her for this great honor. It came as a big surprise and is very humbling.

Alvin Millard ~ Honorary Chute Boss ~ 2008

Alvin MIllard has lived in the Blunt area his entire life. He began riding horses at an early age, but his parents wouldn't allow him to compete n the arena until 1949 when he was twenty years old. Back then arenas were often made by parking cars in a circle or throwing up steel posts and number nine wire. He rode both barebacks and saddle broncs and dogged steers competitively until 1959 when he went into the service. In 1955 Alvin returned from the service and went straight back to the arena. He married Betty Hilmer on Feb 14, 1959. When Kenny and Steve hit the rodeo trail in the early 1970s, Alvin became a familiar face behind or in front of the bucking chutes on many 4-H and high school rodeos, be it pulling a flank, helping a kid or pulling the gate. He was no stranger to this part of arena life as he worked for Korkow Rodeos, Sutton Rodeos and Art Cowan over the years pulling flanks and pulling gates. Alvin helped build the original arena in Blunt out of the bridge plank on Sunday afternoons. In the early 1990's the Blunt 4-H rodeo was dedicated to Alvin and his family.
